8,000 Days of Retirement According to MIT AgeLab
(this presentation has been accepted by CFP Board for 1 CFP CEU)
With today's rising lifespans, retirees could be facing roughly 20 or more years in retirement, which is approximately 8,000 days. Framed in this way, it becomes clearer that retirement is not an end, but rather a new, complex, and unknown phase of life, during which so much could happen. Most clients have a clear image of Day One. Maybe even Day 1,001. But few can imagine 8,000 days of golf, and even fewer have a vision of what they will be doing on any given day-such as Day 4,567. But getting started on the right foot can be crucial.
Instead of planning for 'retirement' as a single state, it may be beneficial to reframe the conversation to reflect a four-phased concept of retirement. Each is characterized by the tasks and issues individuals are most likely to be managing. The four retirement phases enable a clear vision to plan and to anticipate what is likely to come.
1. The Honeymoon Phase
2. The Big Decision Phase
3. The Navigating Longevity Phase
4. The Solo Journey Phase
Learning Objectives: (1) Understand the four phases of retirement, each one of which presents distinctly unique tasks and issues that must be managed, so that they can educate and guide their clients during the retirement planning process, and (2) Understand the need to advise clients of the importance of planning ahead for each one of these four phases during their retirement years.
Level of Complexity: Intermediate
What is NexGen+?
This event is intended to support the next generation of financial planners. By "next generation," we mean not only those that fall into the typical NexGen age group, but also CFP® students, new planners, and career transitionists of all ages... and we welcome more seasoned planners, allied professionals and educators who wish to connect with this group. No matter your age or experience - come join us to grow your network, to learn business success strategies, to discover new ways to market yourself and/or your practice, and to make meaningful connections (and have some fun).
MANY THANKS TO OUR EVENT SPONSOR!
